The dilemmas inherent in cultivating the soil, producing
crops, and raising livestock go beyond the current food crisis. They are
about the livelihoods of farmers -- and consumers everywhere; about crops
and soil, land rights and indigenous peoples, gender, and rural landscape
and culture; about animals, biofuels, GMOs, pesticides and fertilisers;
about environment and organic production; about trade barriers, corporate
farms and subsidies. They are about sustainability. IPS explores this
complex topic in our coverage on agriculture.
